The door is stuck, leaning, or grinding. What you do in the next ten minutes decides whether this is a two hundred dollar visit or a two thousand dollar one.
Do This
Stop operating it. Whatever it just did, it is going to do worse if it does it again.
Pull the manual release. That is the red cord hanging from the trolley on the ceiling rail. It disconnects the door from the opener so the motor cannot drive it, including if somebody else wanders in and presses the wall button.
Leave the door where it is. Half open, leaning, jammed at an angle: leave it. It is not in a stable configuration and it does not need to be moved to be assessed.
Keep people and vehicles clear. A door off its track is heavy, under spring tension, and no longer properly captured by the thing that is supposed to hold it.
Look, without touching. Note whether it is level or leaning, whether a cable is hanging slack, whether you can see a gap in the spring coil above the opening, and whether anything is visibly bent. All of that is useful on the phone.
Not That
Do not press the button again to see if it still works. This is the single most expensive habit in garage doors. The opener is strong and it does not know the door is jammed. Each attempt drives the assembly further out of true, and bent track becomes a creased panel.
Do not try to lever it back into the track. Prying at a door under tension with a crowbar is how people get hurt and how tracks get torn off their brackets.
Do not try to force it level by lifting one side. If a cable has gone, one side has no support and lifting the other makes the geometry worse.
Do not park under it. Obvious, and worth saying.
Why the Damage Escalates
A garage door runs in a track with a few millimetres of tolerance. Every part of it, rollers, hinges, cables, drums and springs, assumes the door is square and captured.
Take one roller out of the track and the door is no longer square. Now the remaining rollers are being loaded at an angle they were never designed for, the cables are winding unevenly onto their drums, and the panels are carrying twist. Cycle it in that state and each of those small wrongnesses does a little permanent damage.
That is the whole reason the advice is stop. Not because one more attempt is dangerous in itself, but because the cost curve is steep and each press moves you along it.
What Actually Happened
Four things present as a stuck door and they are different repairs.
A roller jumped the track. Usually a worn roller that was skidding instead of rolling, or a loose track bracket letting the track flex. Modest repair, and the real work is finding the cause.
A cable came off its drum or broke. The door lifts on one side only and jams. Very common near the water in Long Beach, where salt corrodes cables from the inside of the strand so they look fine until they part.
A spring broke and the door dropped. Sometimes hard. The door lands out of square, often with a cable off, and it usually needs springs, cables and alignment together.
Something hit it. A vehicle, most often. The force travels beyond the panel it struck, into the track, the rollers and sometimes the jamb.
What to Say When You Call
Four things, and they let whoever answers work out what to put on the van:
- Is it stuck open, closed, or partway?
- Is it level or leaning to one side?
- Can you see a hanging or frayed cable, or a gap in the spring coil?
- Did anything hit it, or did it fail on its own?
That difference matters. A door that jumped a track on its own and a door reversed into by a car need different parts, and the second one needs the jamb and opener rail checked as well.
If the House Is Open
If the door is stuck open and your garage connects to the house, say that when you call. It moves you up the list. If it is going to be a while, lock the internal door between the garage and the house, which most people never do, and move anything obviously valuable out of sight.
The Honest Cost Picture
A jumped roller re-seated the same day, with the worn roller replaced and the track re-secured, is at the cheap end.
Cables, drum re-timing and some track work is more.
A creased panel is a section replacement, and if the model is discontinued and no section will match, it becomes a whole door.
The gap between the first and the last is very wide, and a meaningful share of the doors that end up at the expensive end got there after the failure, not during it.

Stopping It Happening Again
An off-track door is nearly always the visible end of something that had been developing quietly.
Rollers are the usual culprit. A roller in good condition spins freely as the door moves. A worn one skids along the track without turning, and a skidding roller under load will eventually climb out. Watch yours next time the door runs; once you have seen the difference between spinning and skidding you cannot unsee it.
Track brackets loosen. Every cycle puts a small load into the brackets holding the track to the framing. Over years they work loose, the track flexes slightly as the door passes, and eventually a roller finds the gap.
Uneven spring tension pulls the door out of square, so it runs with a slight twist. That twist loads one side of the track harder than the other for years.
All three are caught in an annual service, which is the honest argument for having one. None of them announce themselves before the day the door jams.
A Note on Doing It Yourself
There are videos showing how to lever a door back into its track. They make it look manageable and for a single jumped roller on a light door it sometimes is.
The reason we would still say leave it: you cannot tell from the outside whether the door is only off the track, or off the track because a cable has gone, or because a spring is close to failing. If it is either of the latter, the door is being held by less than you think, and the moment you take its weight on a pry bar you find out which.
The repair is not usually expensive. The mistake sometimes is.
